Although expanding into other international boundaries has a lot of benefits for a company, I personally think many companies try to expand too quick into international boundaries without fundamentally strengthening its company within its homeland, consequently facing other companies to become a threat to its expansion. For instance, Uber, one of the quickest growing companies, is losing its position as the leader in many ride-sharing markets due to its ambition for global domination in the ride-sharing industry, exhausting most of its recourses. Its competitors (Didi, Grab, Lyft, Taxify, Ola) began to pick up with its large investment company Softbank (A Japanese investment firm known for investing in Alibaba) at there back supporting them financially. In Asia, Didi and Grab have already closed the deal with Uber, and Softbank buying over 15 percent of the Uber in 2017. With all this in mind, Uber has faced many threats to its rapid global expansion, shrinking its market share in the ride-sharing industry.

Although your observation is valid and true, the issue with companies expanding too quickly internationally is as we already know, bad politics regulations and various problems at home. Then again, competition is another big issue. If I don’t go there first, the other guy will. Sometimes being the first is better off then trying to get in when the market is saturated.

Unlike domestic projects,international projects have to overcome several difficulties, including culture, language, or even education background. However, with the advantage of diversity, the team will gain more brain power to complete the project, but if the team were not well manage, it may cause disaster. Communication is the most important tool when running international projects. Therefore, we usually say most of the great projects were usually international projects because it requires high level of management skills.

International project have both positive and negative effects between country and country. For example, international project can increase income and efficiency, but some people will also lose their job because other countries are more competitive, many events like this had lead to protest and rebellion. Language and culture problems should also take into consideration if any people want to do some international project, misunderstanding may cause serious outcome, same words or gestures may have different meaning in different countries, so having enough research before doing any international project can prevent conflicts and culture shock.

Sure, some people in some countries may lose jobs because others in other countries are willing to do the same thing for a lot less. But this can increase competitiveness and diversifying. I sometimes hear and read about people saying “I lost a lousy job to globalization which pushed me to find a much better job that I now enjoy”. Capable and competitive individuals are not really affected by globalization, they are benefited by it!

International projects are rather complex compared to local ones. If an international project proceeds smoothly, it could potentially bring in various benefits due to the fact that it involves global mindsets. Accumulated knowledge and experience of people from all over the world should stimulate a ongoing project, yet for the same reason it could also result in conflicts from different culture, languages and habits. Therefore, i believe that executors should make use of the advantages of an international project by communicating and creating mutual understandings.

In my opinion conflicts from diversity are much easier and more pleasant to deal with Conflicts from politics and polarization as we now see in the USA are much worse. I would rather risk being let go from a job because I wasn’t competent enough rather than being fired do to PC as it often happens in some places.

The scale of international projects would be much bigger and complex than local projects. When doing international projects, there are always many problems that need to be solved. Cultural differences, educational backgrounds and ways of people doing jobs are common problems that might be happened during the project process. Before starting an international project, project manager should always do research intensively and analyze every aspect that is related to the project. Figuring out the problems that may have, assessing the feasibility of the project and establishing some preventive measures are the ways for project managers that might help processing the projects smoothly.

Project managers leading international projects face a variety of practical challenges. For example, time zones are important. How will you conduct real-time team meetings? Who is going to be the person who gets up in the middle of the night for a call with the overseas development team to go through the testing results? If you have international responsibilities then you not only have to educate team members in how to work well together, but you also have to manage upwards and ensure that senior stakeholders understand the constraints of this type of project.

I agree that live video conferences are often a problem in international projects. It is why we still have to fly to conferences, meetings and workshops. Perhaps in the future with AI increasing in use and sophistication we can have our own AI impersonator go to a live video conference in the middle of the night! 😉
