  1. It was a pretty cool experience of having such a special teaching style.
Before the class, I expected a lot, and I’m so glad that I enrolled English department’s class and prepared a heart to learn new things. Because of Eddie’s internet teaching, I absorbed a lot of different thinking and it’s not a usual class in my life time, especially in Taiwan.
    THAN YOU!

In sports, you practice long and hard before you get the opportunity to experience the thrill of performance.
School, for better or worse, is the same. Hours of toil and tedium, often followed by a single performance– an exam. No wonder students often face burnout.
On the other hand, knowing things is great. One of the rare joys in life is sharing what you know with someone else who appreciates it and can add to it.
That is where professor Livis comes in. Doctor Dan can hook you up with exciting guests live in video chat, interacting with you from all over the world.
I walked out of one such session into the evening air with my mind abuzz, and absolutely exhausted from the proceeding conversation. It wasn’t that I had learned so very much. That can’t be done in a couple of hours of lecture and discussion. It was something different. My perception of quite a few things had been shifted, some ever-so-slightly. Changing your world view can be done with just a few words, but the process may go on for days.
That was my experience. Yours may vary, and that is half the fun.

    Brian Oscar,
former student of Professor Dan Livis at Feng Chia University,
currently enrolled at NTHU for an IMBA.

  11. Over about 2 years I was lucky enough to take several courses with Dan. In each one I managed to take away a wealth of experience. Not only did I enjoy learning from the lectures, but Dan was always warm and encouraging with classroom discussion, happy to allow broader discussion of international topics to make sure what we were learning was relevant to the modern business environment. I would particularly strongly recommend him as a teacher to anyone considering a field in research or business.

As a local (Taiwanese) professor and Dean of the Business Administration Dept. at National Taichung University of Science and Technology, I’m very pleased and excited to have Dr. Clinciu and Mr. Eddie have a discussion with our students about information technology and information systems. I was so amazed about how internet and modern technologies can help us to have such great learning experiences for our local and international students anywhere in Taiwan. Eddie has very innovative ways to explain various concepts and ideas to students about IT and information systems. Our students really enjoyed his participation by internet and benefited from this kind of learning experience and I hope our students can have the chance to experience these interesting and fascinating learning activities. I can say that this is one of the great ways for the future of education! I recommend to all schools to try this learning method for their students!

Thank you to Dan and Eddie

Now I’m taking a Master degree, but I’m having second thoughts about the value it will provide me with in my life, therefore I’m happy for initiatives like this! I would like to express that this is one of the best ways for students to learn by thinking outside of the box which they don’t do very often. As international student in graduate school in Taiwan, I often had difficulty to cope with the Taiwanese professors and their teaching style. I was wondering if I would ever find a professor to help me learn in a more creative and interesting way. I had the chance to take Prof. Daniel’s class and the teaching style using discussions with online guests really fascinated and impressed me. I could certainly say his courses were the best courses I ever had in my studies in Taiwan. I wish he can continue to do this and recommend the forum style teaching to every student or university. Thank you Prof Daniel and Eddie.. You guys rock!

  25. I’m Mai, a former student of Prof. Daniel at Feng Chia University. During the period that i already studied and worked in Taiwan, I was lucky and honored to participate in some his discussions. Through each seminar gave me the experience very exciting to some problems. Simultaneously with the teaching methods of professors Daniel, I believe that not only I, but other students also perceive what they got is the acquisition of knowledge easier and more comfortable. Example, He helped me get in-depth knowledge to start a business that the first we have to build effective working group. So how to get, first of all we been through a quiz about yourself. After completion of all tests we will know more about what exactly his forte. You have strong ability to communicator,or entrepreneur, or scientist, perceiver, introversion, extraversion, preference for creative problem solving. And a strong team will be formed by combining people with different strengths again. So you see that your team works really strong because defects or weaknesses of you have been offset by the strengths of the other members.
Method has helped improve the quality of teaching in the university, which is proved by the professor’s classes attracted more and more students enrolling. I hopefully will have the opportunity to continue to attend more of his discussions. Finally, I would like to thankful Prof. Daniel for the dedication and knowledge that I have received from him.

  28. As I had first hand experience from the first steps of Dan introducing his new discussion style
teaching sessions where we had the chance to reach out to experts talking about topics we
usually just had been taught in very boring and ineffective lecture style, I can say I am glad
for the introduction of this new teaching style to the Taiwanese education system.

In my opinion it is exactly what the Taiwanese education system lacks at the moment. More
discussions and critical thinking on topics. Since the local teaching style too often is based
on lectures of single teachers only the discussions where a refreshing part of my studies at
    Feng Chia University.

Unfortunately by now I am already graduated but I think founding the HET Forum is a great
way to make the needed changes in the Taiwanese learning system to further strengthen
critical thinking making Taiwanese and foreign students even more competitive on the market.
Especially when they get the chance to exchange thoughts with experts on the topics.

  29. I had the pleasure of sitting in on one of Dr. Livis’s HET forum where special guest Edmond Constantinescu shared with us his ideas on religious philosophy and theology, both of which are covered in more detail in his book Ichneumonidae. While I must confess much of the discussion details from that forum are hazy at best two years later, I do vividly recall the level of engagement among my peers which I can only attribute to the open learning environment that is the HET forums. It would be no exaggeration on my part when I say that all post-secondary students would benefit tremendously from sitting in on these forums on a regular basis.

There is a saying. “Something which is originally from a heart is easy to reach a heart”. I couldn’t understand it well until the day I met our professor Dan. He is one of my lecturers at Feng Chia university for the first semester. He always find the best way to instruct us. I was impressed by his natural and friendly teaching method, especially his new continuous teaching dialogue method. I still remember the feeling I got when I attended his interesting dialogue class. I was excited and inspired because I had chance to communicate with Dan’s friend who has a lot of knowledge in life. We chatted like friends and no distance between us. I appreciate this method. Today I am happy to know that Dan is going to implement it for the whole of Taiwan. I believe that students in Taiwan or even other countries will love it as our class does. I hope he can develop this interesting method to other countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, etc.^_^
P.S Thanks a lot for what he has done for our class and Taiwan’s education.

I’m Peter, a 3rd year student in Feng Chia University. I had the opportunity to take Dr. Dan’s classes. During my 3 years, Dan was one of the few professors in the university who brought us a new learning experience. He tried to introduce us something new, something different. He organized forum style classes where he invited speakers from around the world to participate live in discussions. The classes are very interactive, we can exchange our ideas, we can ask questions and we can learn form each other.

To add some healthy critics too, sometimes we didn’t get what our guest speaker were saying (the person who was broadcasted over the internet) or either he didn’t get us. These were mainly because of technological issues which has to be improved in the future. Overall, I’m satisfied with the learning experience.

  36. From my experience polish and taiwanese education system suffers from the same problem – inactive students. This teaching technic is much needed step to improve that. Not only it allows to actually be creative, but be creative in presence of brilliand minds. I still think some incentives should be created to motivate people to fully benefit from this… but that’s for smarter minds than mine to invent.

I hope that amount of this kind of classes will increase. And that we will come back to lost times when studies were about developing your creative capabilities and not memorizing stuff for tests ;).

Hi everyone, I am Harry from Vietnam. I used to studied a Feng Chia University, Taiwan and my thesis professor is Prof. Daniel. I like the way he transfers knowledge to us. It is not only from his knowledge or from the books, but it is also from his friends from other side of the world, Eddie. It is an interesting method that I am impressed. With the strong and huge information in Internet, I am not sure that you will find what you needs and you have to search several websites to understand clearly. I am glad that Prof. Daniel build the bridge for whom wants to know a subject with many angles from individual’s opinions or group’s opinion. The world is more flat and this bridge should be used more.

He has a sense of humor and an open mind and heart to listen and learn from others, including students. He encourages discussion and participation in his classes. I’ve also had the pleasure of attending three HET discussions and have always come out after the discussions more enlightened as well as pondering about the discussions for days after.
